Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent all kinds of network issues.
Fact. If you need your on-premises, cloud monitoring, or hybrid environment to have a high level of customization, some amount of manual intervention is inevitable.
Also fact. Just because your monitoring environment requires manual configuration, it doesn’t follow that it will be extremely complicated. A network monitoring solution can be highly customizable and simple too.
PRTG’s plug-and-play setup, drag-and-drop interfaces, and comprehensive documentation give you the best of all worlds. Whether you’re happy using it out of the box or need to tweak it to your exact requirements for more granular network management and optimization, our monitoring solution keeps things user-friendly and intuitive.
Because, the sooner you’re up and running, the sooner you can get back to the more important parts of your job.

Why PRTG? For three reasons. Advanced functionality. Automation workflows. And predictable, all-inclusive pricing. But that's not all: here are four more reasons why PRTG Network Monitor is the monitoring software of your choice.
Whether you’re using it on-premises, in the cloud, or with a hybrid setup, auto-discovery does most of the heavy lifting, finding all your connected physical, cloud-based, and virtual devices, assigning the right sensors, and bringing accurate, real-time performance data into your monitoring environment in minutes.
All your IT infrastructure's health and performance metrics in one place. Track routers, firewalls, cloud infrastructure like AWS and Azure, VMWare, web services, and more. PRTG has 250+ preconfigured sensors and supports all major vendors, a wide range of operating systems — including Linux — and unlimited local and remote devices.
Set up your monitoring environment exactly the way you want it, without complex configurations or hair-tearing. Create custom sensors, pick your preferred performance and alert thresholds, create top lists to see your most important metrics at a glance, and design custom reports, graphs, and other visualizations.
A powerful, flexible, and scalable monitoring system, with costs you can control. PRTG’s fully-featured free plan lets you get started without spending a cent. And our sensor-based pricing means no nasty shocks at the end of the billing cycle. If anything, the model means PRTG often works out cheaper than comparable monitoring tools.

PRTG is set up in a matter of minutes and can be used on a wide variety of mobile devices.
We also compared PRTG with other monitoring tools:
OpenNMS is hard to beat for flexibility and configurability, but making the most of it requires time, patience, and expertise. PRTG is just as powerful and offers a high level of customization, but it's much quicker and easier to set up.
Netreo offers configurability but is resource-heavy and requires manual tweaking. PRTG is powerful, flexible, works out of the box, and has budget-friendly pricing.
UptimeRobot is great for cron, port, website, response time and uptime monitoring. For complex needs or advanced features, a more comprehensive monitoring tool like PRTG is recommended.
The basic version of the open-source tool Nagios is free of charge. But most users spent many hours to set up and customize the tool. In case of problems, browsing through forums is often the only solution.
Real-time notifications mean faster troubleshooting so that you can act before more serious issues occur.

Choosing between Paessler PRTG and Opsview depends on several factors, such as your specific network monitoring needs, budget, and technical resources available in your organization.
PRTG is ideal:
Opsview might be your choice:
Both Opsview and PRTG come with the advanced features you'd expect from an enterprise-grade monitoring solution, but they have different strengths.
If your infrastructure is still heavily dependent on Nagios plugins, Opsview is probably the better option, because it's built on top of Nagios architecture, and also has extremely granular alerting configurations — useful if you work in an environment where you'd expect to receive lots of alerts and need to cut through the noise. The trade-off is that it requires more manual configuration.
PRTG, on the other hand, is an easy-to-use all-rounder. It's highly configurable and supports unlimited devices, which means it can scale as you grow, but you can also plug and play. It's also more cost-effective and transparent, with all features included on every tier.
Any network monitoring solution will require some manual configuration, especially if you have large IT infrastructure or need complex monitoring capabilities. That said, setting up PRTG couldn't be simpler.
Whether you choose PRTG Hosted Monitor — our cloud-hosted solution — or our on-premise solution PRTG Network Monitor (or a hybrid cloud setup), Auto-Discovery will do most of the work. Key in an IP address range and it will detect every device within that range and assign the appropriate sensors. You can start monitoring straight away, or configure the environment to suit.
And, if you're stuck, you can consult our extensive documentation or chat with our friendly support team. Yes, even if you're on the free plan.
Opsview is also relatively simple to set up, but, as its built on Nagios, it tends to require more intervention, such as command-line steps, manual data entry, and deployment scripts.
PRTG uses sensor-based pricing, with all features and functionalities included in the base price, even on the free plan. This means you don't pay to access specific features, or depending on whether you want to deploy PRTG’s network monitoring software on-premises or in the cloud. You pay for the metrics you want to monitor. And the first 100 sensors are free, for life, so you can start monitoring at no cost.
Opsview, on the other hand, uses a host-based pricing model, with a host being a monitored physical device, such as a router, or a virtual machine with a unique IP address. There are also two plans — essentials and enterprise — with the former, less expensive plan having fewer features.
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
